FOURTH OF JULY

So this is a pretty patriotic month – World Cup and the Fourth of July – which means there are a lot of red, white & blue moments.  Here are some fun outfits to wear during your World Cup parties and Fourth of July bbq.

There is pretty much no outfit more American than jeans and a white top.  It’s true, you can’t question this. Add a couple of your own unique touches, like layering gold necklaces and some bright red shoes, and are now “put-together”

IMG_0131

Because fireworks are at night, bring a patriotic scarf along!

IMG_0142-1

Cowgirl boots are also quite American, in fact – go ahead and feel free to substitute out one of the three colors for cowgirl boots if you feel led to do so. I don’t need any red here, I have boots!!

IMG_0301

If in doubt, wear simple jewelry like this tiny gold triple heart pendant necklace or tiny star post earrings to be more patriotic!

IMG_0306

Of course I support wearing a dress on the Fourth as well. Here are 3 different looks with the color of your choosing:

First up, the red dress:

IMG_0171-1

Put it with a white statement necklace and some cobalt shoes (or vice versa) and you have the perfect Fourth of July get up.  (Of course have a jean jacket on hand if it gets chilly)

IMG_0160-2

Navy Blue dress: I love these because they are like the casual little black dress. (And if you spill salsa on it you can see it as much)

IMG_0111-1

Just chilling and “swooshing” my hair around.

IMG_0123-1

White Dress: The classic summer staple.  Of course it works well for Fourth of July, it is part of the color trio AND it is super feminine.  I put it with the Blue and Red Rayon Polka Dot scarf and bright red sandals.  And again, have a jean jacket handy in case it gets cold at night!

IMG_0101

Need a more fashionista approach?

Try a black skirt with a sleeveless chambray shirt (patterned or not), red sandals, and a statement necklace.

IMG_0034-1

OR a similar look but with a bright red skirt. Also I must point out how awesome these taupe summer booties are…. I just got them at Nordstrom Rack a couple weeks ago for a very good deal – go check it out!

IMG_0055

This white necklace really is perfect for your summery outfits!

IMG_0061

You could also take a statement skirt and put it with a tied up t-shirt:

IMG_0178

AND a cat– he’s wearing red too!

IMG_0190-1

How about a navy eyelet lace skirt with a white cotton tank top, red sandals, and a red patterned scarf? Why yes, I believe this works too!

IMG_0218

Or let the skirt do all the work for you and put a simple top (and belt if needed) with it.

IMG_0231

Here is another fun outfit my great photographer picked out for me, thank you Lyssa!

IMG_0264

Oh yeah, sequins, lace, cowgirl boots, AND a sleeveless military jacket! YAY AMERICA!

Tie a belt around it for extra points.

One Dress, Eight Looks

You guys, I GOT A  JOB! Like, big girl, business suit, water cooler, kind of a job. That is why I have been silent the past week.  But do not despair! I still care about your fashion needs.

Because I lost my camera, I enlisted the help of my gorgeous friend…. AGAIN.

I mean seriously, how awesome is this girl?

20140227-192626.jpg

Ok enough silliness.

Even after I took all the pictures for this post I kept finding more and more ways to wear this dress, it is SO versatile. This is the kind of dress that you could find at almost any store, for almost any price point.

You can also add a cat to your look, they make great accessories… Okay maybe I wasn’t done with the silliness.

And if you didn’t know how to rock cowgirl boots… this is how!

20140227-192635.jpg

Basically, a simple patterned dress will make a huge difference in your closet. The great thing about black & white is that you can wear almost any color with it, even brown, and it is season-less.  As we get closer and closer to vacation season, think about how easy packing could be with a staple like this! Get creative and have fun with it!

Birthday Panthers

Oh it was a good birthday: Gerber daisies, caramel flan latte, doughnuts, strawberry cake, and a panther dress.

20140131-192312.jpg

My birthday is a day where I allow myself to wear whatever I want, and that means I get dressy.  That also means I get a lot of Oklahoman stares. But guess what, I don’t care! It’s my birthday , I’M GONNA WEAR A DRESS WITH PANTHERS ON IT!

20140131-170025.jpg

I seriously could not resist this dress. Let me say this again, it has PANTHERS on it.  Anthropologie gets me. Also my husband loves it, which makes me happy. He gets me too.

20140131-170129.jpg

I did try to dress it down a teensy bit with booties, a blue belt and a safari jacket… however, it didn’t stop the stares.

20140131-170034.jpg

Here is a dressier way to wear it, tights, black booties, fancy necklace…

20140131-170051.jpg

I came to the conclusion that I should just wear what I want all the time.  I feel WAY more fabulous and confident when I am put together. Haters gonna hate, people.  Plus, you want friends who love you no matter what you wear.  Even if it has sparkly big cats on it.

So when I told my husband how I wanted to post more about what I wore everyday instead of just every once in awhile, he started laughing so hard he fell on the floor.  Ok, so I wear a lot of lounge clothes. I admit it. But, I can still get dressed up to go to the grocery store! Another reason why I substitute teach, I can wear my cute dresses and patterned pants.

20140116-194630.jpg

Black and white dresses are awesome because you can wear them during any season and you can wear almost any type of shoe and any type of accessory.   In fact, if you follow this blog I’m sure you will see a lot of black and white dresses.

A lot of times I put a bright belt with this dress, but today I decided to go with a more classic look and put my gold belt and clear bead statement necklace with it.

20140116-194623.jpg

I added a touch of color with this great hunter green jacket from LOFT.

20140116-194611.jpg

Finally I added this great metallic grey scarf to add a little extra layering and also to be more conservative at work.

You can see how easy it is to layer in the winter! If it was freezing I would have added tights, and worn a long coat over the small blazer.

Layering Neon

This past week at the local high school was spirit week, and one of the days was “Neon Day”.  I decided that neon day would be the best day for me to substitute, obviously.  However, I was disappointed with the amount of neon being worn.

I have the perfect dress for neon day.  It is so neon that it reflects off of my face. How awesome is that?

20140116-192427.jpg

In order to calm it down at little, I put very neutral accessories with it: Gold belt, Clear bead statement necklace, brown boots, and my cat. (I honestly could not get my cat to stop walking in front of me in every picture, I don’t get it.  Maybe he was a model in a past life, I don’t know. Moving on!)

20140116-194535.jpg

Because it was cold outside and I wanted to make the look a little more casual, I added a floral scarf.

20140116-192434.jpg

Picking out my jacket was the hardest part. What do you put with neon? A brown jacket would have added too much brown to the outfit, but grey did not make sense either.  Finally I came to my senses, NAVY.  Navy blue looks awesome with neon and adds a mature touch to the look.

The most important thing to remember about wearing neon is to put neutral accessories with it.  Taupe, gold, and navy blue look great with most neon colors. OR if you have a neon statement piece, let it stand out by wearing neutral clothes.

BOOTS.

It is SOOO incredibly hot here in Enid and getting all of these amazing fall catalogues from Madewell and Anthropologie is really making me ache for some great fall weather.

So that means…. BOOTS! (Plus I just ordered my first pair of cowboy boots and that’s all I can possibly think about right now)

You might not EVER want to own a pair of cowboy boots, but living in Oklahoma basically means that I need them.  Here are my boot staples that I believe everyone should own.

1. Booties— Brown or black.  These are probably my favorite and there are so many styles so there will certainly be a style that is right for almost anyone! (Thinking about that makes me realize that I in fact need more styles to grace the floor of my closet….)

They are also extremely versatile.  I am personally a dress girl, and since I have so many and want to wear them all year, I just put my booties with a sundress and a fabulous blazer.

My new favorite way to wear booties is with a pair of  cuffed skinny or boyfriend jeans.  Luckily for us,  rolling up our jeans just a tiny bit and putting on a heel instantly makes you a fashionista! Ta-DA!!

2. Over the Knee boots – brown or black.  Want to feel super cool and sexy? No? Ok then don’t buy these.  Ok but seriously, buy these. You don’t need to buy the 4 inch snakeskin over the knee boots (please don’t) but get a flat pair or a pair with a small wedge.

The pair I own are suede with a small wedge and they are perfect for the fall and winter.  Put them with black tights and a short dress/ fancy shorts OR wear them over skinny jeans.

I have my eye on these AMAZING frye over the knee boots…. Not that you needed to know that, but my mind is wandering…. Like it does when I start thinking about nachos…. Mmmm nachos…..

overtheknee

(From left to right: 1. Niloulu necklace, Steve Madden boots 2. Niloulu necklace, LOFT shirtdress 3. Anthropologie scarf, Madewell Blazer, Free People dress)

3.   Riding Boots—I would definitely say brown, but if you think you can pull off the  black, go ahead.

These are a little more tricky.  Of course you can wear them with skinny jeans (yeah skinny jeans are the greatest…. But that’s for another day) but you have to be more careful about what else you wear with them.  I  see a lot of women wear them with thick black leggings and a simple tunic (or your man’s button down) and a scarf, but please be careful with this! Make sure if you do this your tunic covers your bum OR just wear your tightest skinny jeans.

You can also wear them with dresses—put them with tights and a dress.  But this is tricky too, you want to make sure that the dress isn’t too long (you could look frumpy) and that the colors make sense together.  I would suggest a simple grey or black dress, with a pattern or not, and a bright colored cardigan or necklace! (In the middle picture I am wearing a simple colored dress with a fun print– and it hits a few inches above my knee)  Think SIMPLE staple pieces and fabulous accessories—there is so much you can do with a great dress. I’m just sayin.

With any boot you really want to study your own legs and learn which areas you want to highlight.  Like with any clothes, you want to make sure you highlight the thinnest part of your body.  For example, even though I love my muscular runners calves, if the top of my boots end where my calf muscles begin, it will cut my legs off and make my legs look chunky.  BUT if I wear short booties,  they will  highlight my slender ankles, and with a heel will bring out my muscle definition.   This is why over the knee boots are so awesome, they go up to the part of your leg that is the thinnest—right above your knee (which is also the most flattering length for a dress).  Everyone will have different leg shapes, so do your research and learn what looks best on you… and when you find that perfect boot(s) haha, buy it in every color…. You can thank me later.

A great way to start is to buy a cheap pair somewhere, in a style you want to try but don’t want to break the bank, and see how you like them.  Then, after you get enough compliments (mostly kidding) buy the more expensive version that will last.

Ok and last but not least, COWBOY BOOTS!!! Just because they were my inspirations for this post.
